How the Extras Industry Works — Your Guide to Being an Extra with Naledis Casting Extras
Welcome to Naledis Casting Extras! You’ve joined — now what?
Q: I’ve just signed up as an extra. What happens next?
After joining Naledis Casting Extras database, our casting team will send you WhatsApp updates when you are needed for extra work in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and other locations across South Africa. Please keep your WhatsApp contact current and respond quickly to increase your chances!
What should I expect on set?
Q: How long is a day on set as an extra?
The day lasts until the client says, “It’s a wrap!” This can mean 6 to 12 hours or sometimes longer. Please be patient, bring water and snacks, and be prepared to wait between scenes.
Q: What kind of roles do extras usually get?
Extras fill background roles like pedestrians, shoppers, diners, or crowd members. Usually, extras do not have speaking parts.
Managing your profile and photos
Q: How often should I upload new photos?
We recommend updating your photos every 6 months or sooner if your appearance changes significantly. Fresh, clear photos help casting directors see your current look.
Q: What kind of photos do I need?
Clear headshots and full-body shots, with natural lighting and minimal makeup. Please avoid heavy filters or heavy editing.
Booking and availability
Q: How often will I get work as an extra?
Extras work is on-demand and varies per project. Staying active on WhatsApp and responding quickly to updates helps you get booked more often.
Q: Can I accept jobs outside of your agency?
You’re welcome to pursue other opportunities, but please keep your availability updated with us so we can offer you the best casting calls.
On-set behavior and tips
Q: Can I bring friends or family to set?
We kindly ask that you do not bring friends or family to set, as productions have strict rules to maintain safety and focus.
Q: Can I take photos or videos on set?
No photos or videos are allowed on set. This helps protect the production’s confidentiality and respects everyone involved.
Q: How many outfits do I need to bring?
Usually, the casting coordinator will ask you to bring 3 different outfits suitable for the shoot. This helps the production team get the right look.
Q: Do you ever ask for sizes?
Yes, we often ask for your clothing sizes to help wardrobe prepare the right costumes or outfits.
Q: What else should I bring?
For shoots in shops or outdoors, especially in the evenings or cold weather, bring slippers and a gown or blanket for downtime, as studios and locations can get chilly.
Q: What about signing in and out?
Always sign in when you arrive and sign out when you leave. This helps keep accurate records and ensures you get paid correctly.
Q: Any tips on behavior?
Always be polite, friendly, and say nice things about the client, Naledis Casting Extras, and the product. A great attitude helps you get rebooked!
Health and communication
Q: What if I get sick or can’t make a booking?
Please notify the casting coordinator or Naledis Casting Extras as soon as possible if you are unwell or cannot attend a booking. This helps us manage the shoot smoothly and offer your role to someone else if needed.
Q: How do I update my WhatsApp contact details?
If your phone number changes, please inform us immediately via email or WhatsApp so we can update your profile and keep you in the loop with casting calls.
Payments and administration
Q: How long does payment take?
Payments take about90 days from the date of the statement. This is because we first receive an official order from the client, then invoice them.
Q: Who handles payments?
We work with an outside firm of accountants who process payments on the first Friday of each month. This ensures all extras are paid accurately and on time.
Important documentation
Q: What documents do I need to provide?
We require a copy of your ID or birth certificate because clients issue IRP5 tax certificates at year-end (28 February). Please note IRP5 certificates may be delayed as clients handle hundreds of these forms.
Q: Do I need a tax number?
Yes, a tax number is required. Our accountants can assist you in obtaining one, but the fee for registration must be paid by you.
Special rules for children extras
Q: Are there special rules for children under 16?
Yes. All children under 16 must have a signed letter of consent from a parent or guardian. We send this letter for you to sign, which is submitted to the South African Labour Department for approval.
Q: Is a child minder present?
Yes, a qualified child minder is always on set during filming. Hours for children may vary and are strictly regulated.
Q: Can children be left alone on set?
No. Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the entire duration of the shoot.
