How Auditions Work – Behind the Scenes with DJ’s-Naledis
Many people see an audition as a simple “turn up and read a script” moment — but there’s a lot of hard work happening behind the scenes from both the agent’s and the casting director’s side. Here’s how the process usually works:
1. The Brief Arrives
A casting director sends DJ’s-Naledis an audition brief. This includes:
The type of role (age, look, personality)
Any skills needed (e.g., dancing, horse riding, accents)
Dates, times, and location for the shoot
Wardrobe or styling notes
2. Photos & Profiles Sent to the Client
DJ’s-Naledis searches our database for the right talent and sends photos and details to the casting director or client. This stage is vital — our presentation here often determines whether the talent gets seen in person.
3. Shortlisting
The client or casting director reviews all submissions and decides which people they want to see for the audition. This means not everyone gets called in — only those who fit the brief.
4. Inviting Talent to Audition
Once talent is selected, DJ’s-Naledis contacts them:
We give them the audition time
Provide any scripts or performance instructions
Explain wardrobe requirements
Confirm attendance
5. The Audition Day
Talent arrives at the casting studio, where the casting director films their audition. This can involve:
Reading lines or acting out a scene
Doing an improvised action (e.g., “pretend you’re trying a new ice cream”)
Showing any special skills mentioned in the brief
6. Callbacks
If the client likes your first audition, they may call you back for a second round to test chemistry with other actors or refine the performance.
7. Behind the Scenes Costs
It’s important to understand that everyone is paid for their time — the studio, the casting director, the camera crew, and so on. That’s why punctuality, preparation, and professionalism matter so much.
8. Booking the Job
If you get chosen, congratulations! DJ’s-Naledis will handle all the details: contracts, usage rights, and payment arrangements.
✅ The Takeaway:
An audition is the result of teamwork — the agent finding the right talent, the casting director organising the process, and the client making the final choice. For you as the talent, showing up prepared, confident, and on time is your best shot at success.
